Lincoln’s Logic on Slavery Applied to Abortion
January 22, 2009
By: John Piper Category: Commentary

On January 12, 2009 Samantha Heiges, age 23, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for drowning her newborn in Burnsville, Minnesota. If she had arranged for a doctor to kill the child a few weeks earlier she would be a free woman.

What are the differences between this child before and after birth that would justify it’s protection just after birth but not just before? There are none. This is why Abraham Lincoln’s reasoning about slavery is relevant in ways he could not foresee.

He wrote:

You say A. is white, and B. is black. It is color, then; the lighter, having the right to enslave the darker? Take care. By this rule, you are to be slave to the first man you meet, with a fairer skin than your own.

You do not mean color exactly? You mean the whites are intellectually the superiors of the blacks, and, therefore have the right to enslave them?

Take care again. By this rule, you are to be slave to the first man you meet, with an intellect superior to your own.

But, say you, it is a question of interest; and, if you can make it your interest; you have the right to enslave another. Very well. And if he can make it his interest, he has the right to enslave you. (“Fragments: On Slavery")

There are no morally relevant differences between white and black or between child-in-the-womb and child-outside-the-womb that would give a right to either to enslave or kill the other.

2009 American Atheists Conference

Yeah, so I'll admit it...I'm thinking about going to the American Atheist Conference in 2009.

Now, before you get worried about a major change of heart on my part, let me explain. I'm not thinking about attending for the sake of losing my religion...I'm simply interested in what the 'other side' is saying about God.

I know that if I decide to go that I want to be covered in prayer before I do...mostly because I would need a lot of patience and some extra thick skin on my tongue (so I don't bite it off). I think that as a ministry (GodTalkRadio) I could learn a lot about where some of the hatred that these folks have for God, stems from. Some I'm sure are too smart for God...Some I figure believe that God has let them down...And others are probably angry at the people who claim Christ, but live just like everyone else.

Either way...keep me in your prayers please...I'm not sure that I will be attending, but if I do I want to make sure that it is because God wants me there.

** Free Example of what I can expect to see there **

The debaptism ceremony. I guess people line up to get unbaptised or something. Mostly just another mockery God. But what can you expect from God-haters right?

Can I Get a Wittness?

I saw a link to this video a few weeks back on Ray Comfort's Blog and was going to blog on it but forgot. Then I saw it again tonight on http://www.friendlychristian.com/.

I'd love to know your thoughts on the video, but I'm gonna take a minute to tell you mine.

I think he makes a valid point. I know that many of the atheists that I've run across in my day are usually pretty upset at the idea of any Christians proselytizing....A lot of God haters usually have the opinion that Christians should keep their religion to themselves and not bother anyone else with the 'nonsense'. So, needless to say, it was quite refreshing to hear Penn's response to a Christian who gave him a Bible. I’ll shut up now and I'll the video speak for the rest.
